Enjoy creating stage food props using a variety of methods and materials. The workshop is taught by a master prop-maker with 44 years experience at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Students will leave the workshop with a number of completed projects.

An intensive, hands-on summer course. Learn the skills required to create a stage set, mentored by seasoned professional artists who work at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. The set will be based on the Russian folk tale “Prince Ivan and the Firebird.” Students will receive exceptional instruction at the cost of $165 per week, including materials.

Students will learn welding and bending techniques as they create their own artistic work. The workshop is taught by a world-class master prop-maker and artist who was Head of Props at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival for 39 seasons. Beginners through advanced.

Enjoy the fantasy of this multi media experience. Students will model a mask in plasticene on a face cast. After making a mould of the original, they will produce a positive which they will paint and decorate using a variety of techniques and materials. Participants may choose to use a more direct method of mask construction using wire, tape and fabric. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and inspiration.

Animatronics
Learn how animatronics work and how to successfully apply them in a theatre situation. Students explore several different movements and how to incorporate them into their props. Please come with a small project idea in mind (drawings, pictures, found objects such as a toy or previously built prop). Everyone will go home with a working animatronics model, servos and radio control system.
Project Examples: animating parts of a large action figure, animating a bird with head and small wings, animating a stuffed character.

Exploring Shadow Puppets
Students will learn to make basic shadow puppets with simple materials and discover different ways to animate them. We will look at traditional methods as well as modern, flat and three dimensional puppets. The puppets and puppetering skills will be brought together in a brief narrative performance.

Learn the basics of how to make clean butted chain mail. Each student is instructed on the basic steps of forming and cutting rings, and forming basic link patterns, as well as making more advanced samples. Everyone will leave with a few samples (just enough to get hooked) and the skills needed to create their own mail. Please bring sturdy pair of work gloves.
