During 2020/21 Tamara Marie Kucheran our award winning Costume Design Instructor took  her vast wealth of knowledge online and now we want to share it with our participants.

Introduction to

Costume Design

Costume Design may be taken as part of the

Theatre Production Arts certificate.

ARTIST INSTRUCTOR: TAMARA MARIE KUCHERAN

During this intensive, one-week introductory course, participants gain an understanding of the principles of design and the way costume defines and supports character.

This full day, online, synchronous course is limited to ten participants. It features live instruction, access to one-on-one mentoring, and collaborative interactions among students, instructor and special guests. Previous drawing experience is an asset but not essential.

To complete this course successfully, participants must be available during scheduled class times for live streaming and/or group interactions. Reliable internet is mandatory. We recommend learners access the class using a desktop, laptop, or large-screen tablet. A functional camera, mic and speakers/headset are required.

Participants will learn and expand on the following skills:

·    Examine text and character analysis;

·    Explore concept development;

·    Discuss useful collaboration techniques and professional best                         practices;

·    Discover effective methods for research;

·    Develop an understanding of period silhouettes;

·    Practice rendering techniques using pencil and watercolour;

·    Learn presentation techniques;

·    Create your own designs - from rough sketch to final costume design             plate.

Participants will be required to purchase materials as needed (for example, drawing pencils, sketchbook, watercolour paper and paint kit). Prior to class, students will be asked to read a required play text. They have the option of purchasing the play or borrowing a copy from a library. A full list of recommended supplies and the title of the script will be emailed to all registrants. Estimated cost of materials is $75.
