Puppet Building & Puppetry

During this intensive, two-day introductory course, participants will gain an understanding of the

construction and basic performance of soft foam mouth puppets.


Adults 16+ of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome at this workshop.  No prior experience is required, though hand-sewing abilities are an asset. All materials will be supplied. 


Participants will make their own puppets and learn and expand on the following skills:

  • Explore the different types and styles of puppets;

  • Discuss character design;

  • Learn flat foam patterning;

  • Discover methods of construction, with lots of tips and tricks;

  • Master the art of fabric draping;

  • Practice decoration and design techniques to complete your puppet;

  • Discuss different needs of film and stage puppets;

  • Learn basic puppetry performance, so you know how to get started with your new puppet;

  • Observe the effectiveness of subtle puppet moves to provide expression.
