Introduction to Sewing
ARTIST INSTRUCTOR: LINDA SPARKS
Dates: Saturday June 8 & Sunday June 9, 2019
In this single weekend course, designed for the beginner sewer, participants learn how to use a sewing machine, and learn both basic pattern-drafting skills and basic sewing-construction skills. What better way to learn than by drafting and sewing 4 small projects in two days: a pillowcase, a tote bag that’s fully lined and includes a pocket, 3 small zipper bags, each with a different zipper application, and a simple skirt.
This class is taught by costumer, corset maker and experienced instructor - Linda Sparks of Farthingales.
In this course students will learn and develop the following skills:
Discover how to thread and set up a sewing machine.
Learn about some sewing machine feet, what they’re for and how to use them.
Explore how to change and adjust stitch length and stitch styles.
Learn basic sewing machine safety.
Work with various stitches on the machine and learn why/when you would use them.
Practice basic drafting techniques: how to use a see-thru-ruler, the importance of right angles and measuring.
Learn basic machine sewing techniques: how to steer your fabric, how to handle fabric at the machine without pins, finish raw edges without a serger.
Explore basic construction techniques: make a pocket, sew on handles, make a lined bag, make a lined skirt, apply zippers, make a casing for elastic or drawstrings.
Discuss working with different fabrics.
This course is for those who have no sewing experience or are not confident with the experience they do have. No sewing experience is necessary.
All tools for this class are supplied for use during the class.
There will be fabric options available, but if you wish to bring your own please bring basic cotton fabrics similar to those used for quilting (and bring thread to match).
The low student-to-teacher ratio in each course ensures instruction is geared to the participant's skill level and experience. Please indicate your related experience when you register.
